   Actually Apple poached designers from Sony…so actually Apple copied Sony
   E.g. the Current Macbook looks like this.

   Noooooo!!

   For a start, the chicklet style keyboard was on a Vaio BEFORE it was on a Mac!! Sony designed such a keyboard while Apple were selling that ridiculous toilet seat contraption. That’s why Apple then asked Sony to design their latest suite which is why Apples look like Viaos!.

   Apple obsession pervades and infects everything, including truth and reality.

   And anyway, since when has Apple hardware design been completely original? Everyone forgets their plagiarism. LG Prada, anyone?

   Apple stole from Sony, Sony changed their design a little, then Sony revert someway, and idiots scream “Apple ripoff!”.

   These comments serve to show what ‘a little knowledge’ about a subject can do.

   Yes, Apple did use 100% Sony ‘design and engineering’… on the Powerbook 100 back in the early 1990’s. ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerBook_100 )

   However, Sony ‘engineers’ were more recently hired into Apple fold to streamline the change-over to Intel — and had absolutely nothing to do with the design aesthetic, which is the focus of this ‘oobject’ entry (Apple design rip-offs). Regarding the design of Apple products, not the actual engineering, commenters here would be better suited looking at the Minimalist movement of the mid-century appliance market (Braun, etc.) … Apple gets a lot of ideas from the modernism/minimalist movement, but this blog post very clearly shows how Sony ripped the laptop design from Apple. Right down to the positioning of trademark, etc.

   I love my Mac. But why can’t most Mac owners/lovers admit to Apple’s flaws? They do have some, you know. Why is it that every time something comes out that bears any similarity at all to an Apple design, “ABC Corp is ripping off Apple!!” ? Lest we forget, the first Mac OS was itself a ripoff of somebody else’s programming efforts, nor did Apple invent the mouse. That is, if we wish to continue using the term “rip off”. I prefer to look at it as wisely realizing that somebody else has already invented/designed the best concept so far, and further realizing that you can capitalize on that design by adding your own modifications and trying to appeal to a different share of the marketspace than the person who originally invented/designed the concept. Television manufacturers all copy each other. But they all employ different details in their own designs, and different details appeal to different consumers. The automotive industry is the same, as is the home appliance industry, as is the computer and electronics industry. It’s not a matter of ripping off any other manufacturer. It’s a matter of modifying an existing design to try and appeal to the people who might not be completely satisfied with the other manufacturer’s design. Some people love Dell’s designs, some love HP/Compaq’s, some love Sony’s, some love IBM’s… some love Apple’s. No single design is going to appeal to every consumer on the planet. That’s why competition exists. Because the market demands it. And there’s nothing wrong with a competitor taking Apple’s design, and modifying it with their own details. That will only serve to make Apple strive to come back with bigger and better, to over-shadow that competitor yet again. And in the end, the consumer wins. Without competition in a fair marketplace, the consumer is the loser, forced to settle for whatever ABC Corporation decides to produce, because they’re the only company producing it.

   Apple does a commendable job at designing products. And just like any other good design house, it takes clues from products out there, whether from the same industry or related ones.

   It’s not the idea itself, it’s the conviction in choosing and implementing one.

   Apple has always been inspired (copied, influenced?) by Braun’s products.

   See how ipod, imac, powermac are strikingly similar to Braun’s products from 1960:
