  1. Jim Says:

I grew up at Moffatt Naval Air Station and have been inside this hanger many times. My father was a pilot in MATS (Military Air Transport Service) stationed at Moffatt just after WWII. It is so big that fog may form inside. I remember seeing one of the experimental vertical take-off aircraft called Pogo, set up at the Northern end on a tether for testing. One of the reasons cited for destoying the hanger is that it is has carcinogen related materials in it’s structure. If so, I and tens of thousands of people that have been inside and/or worked inside should be dead from cancer. What part of Bulls**t do you not understand?

  2. Carl Killius, ENC USNR (Ret.) Says:

Is this the hanger that was originally built to house the Flying aircraft carrier ( Navy Zeppelin USS Macon)? If so it is well worth saving, even if it has no other history. I’m sure that it has much more though. I have never seen the hanger, but have been facinated with the USS Macon and the USS Akron for some time now. Both were built for providing long range early warning capability to battleships of the fleets. The Zeppelins are both lost to the sea. The Akron to the Atlantic, the Macon to the Pacific. It would be nice to keep the memory alive for the 75 Crewman killed when they crashed.

  3. Brian Collins Says:

    Jim:

Just because tens of thousands of people exposed to this thing didn’t die from cancer does NOT mean there was no increased risk to developing cancer… it may have been as little as a 5% increased risk over baseline… that should even justify this demolition. I dont think it’s worth anyone’s time to do formal research on who exactly was affected. As long as we KNOW the material inside is carcinogenic, then it should be disposed of.

Not everyone has a death wish you know. I’d rather see this thing demolished entirely than to see one of my friends die of cancer because of it. It’s just a man-built structure after all… and only what 75 years old? sheesh… demolish it already…

  4. Huw Says:

    I say keep it,

there are ways to contain the carcinogenic material.

Demolishing the building and then transporting and disposing of the material could be much worse than keeping it where it is and containing it.

Besides this is an awesome structure with a facinating history.

  5. Larry Norvall Says:

I have flown in this hanger many times and obviuosly Brian doesnt understand the historic and current value of this building. There is a great museum insie the hanger and with very little upkeep is a timeless historical site. And as the media will tell you everything you eat, drink, of inhale causes cancer. Besides being a great value to the community from a vistor base think of the history and what this building menat to our history through out the years. SAVE THE HANGER

  6. Scott Johnson Says:

Although I live in Montana, I’ve been in Hanger 1 more than once. And I’ve seen fog inside it.

The “State of California” (aka “the land of fruits and nuts” to some folks) has identified more substances “known to California to cause cancer” than the rest of the world combined. In this case it might be the preservative in the timbers…. but it won’t hurt you unless you try eating the timbers.

  7. Bryan in NC Says:

We have a similar hangar here in NC - the Weeksville hangar that has for years been used by military & civilian contractors. These are great pieces of history that deserve to be preserved, but California will raze it for commercial development… idiots…

    SAVE THE HANGARS!

  8. Andy Larkin Says:

This should be kept, knocking it down in typical US fashion will just expose hundreds of thousands of people to the effects of carcinogenic material inside. There is no way at all that you could demolish this thing without releasing the material inside, however you can easily and cheaply contain that material if the structure stays up.

  9. Dad Says:

I was stationed at Moffett Field for 3 years, 67-70. I was a Navy Electronics Technician, and our shop was near the end of the hangar where this photo was taken. So, I was in the hangar nearly every working day for three years. As far as I know, I still don’t have the cancers.

  10. Doug Says:

My dad worked in Hanger 1 as a mechanic for the Navy during WWII. I had the great fun of visiting the hanger with him during an airshow at Moffett Field about 1960. It is difficult to appreciate the scale of the place until you have actually been in it.

Hanger 1 is an iconic landmark for the Bay Area and a wonderful symbol of a bygone era in aviation. It would be a great pity to see it lost forever.
