While the one laptop per child program ended up with a feature stripped laptop that actually cost nearer to $200, Asus promised to deliver a fully fledged commercial version for the same price and fewer compromises.

In the end the linux OS, Asus eee wound up at around $300. However, it is still a remarkable feat.

Using the EEE right now with the default Xandros. I think this machine is the best thing since sliced bread. The size is just right and you gotta love the productivity on the go it gives you.

I second BaDZeD. This legtop (not a laptop anymore :-) does 90% you need on a PC, out of the box. And weighs 2 lbs. And it’s available (gray market tho) even here where I live, in Brazil. So yes, it IS the gadget of 2007, period.

I loaded XP on mine, and upgraded the RAM. It’s going with me today when I get my car serviced. Light, portable, few moving parts. And does most of what I need to do. Good deal for the money.

A truly portable notebook (some $600 less than its nearest competitor) and a commercial product finally taking the non-proprietary OS Linux mainstream.

The default OS is perfectly fine for the tasks and demographic that ASUS intended for it, while its ability to accept other OSs extends its value to some users.

Hi,

I have one too. It’s really cool. I love that the Linux on it is not trimmed down at all (e.g. they have both KDE and Gnome applications installed). Also, I upgraded Skype to the 2.0 Beta for Linux. I can therefore Skype with video which is way cool.

My only regret is that I don’t have HSDPA/EVDO or some other fast on the go internet access. That would be really cool but it would be expensive. Also, it does not have bluetooth, so you can’t use your phone as a modem… But this is not the EEE PC that is faulty, it’s me who does not want to spend the money on T-Mobile…

I use the “Soap on a rope” HSDPA modem from the “Three” network (UK), which gives a 2.8mbps connection, wherever the 3G hardware has been upgraded to HSDPA - check the Three website for a map of the “Turbo” area.

The default Xandros distro on the Eee PC includes all necessary drivers and it only took a couple of mins to set up a new network connection.

The best thing is that Three’s current “Pay as you go” deal costs just £10 per month for 1GB data, £15 for 3GB data or £25 for 7GB data - and you can add more credit to your account as and when you expect to use it.

a very good laptop for the littles applications but xandros is not good. you can install xp ,it’s better and you can play at World of Warrcraft

Living in France… I have to wait for the end of January till I can put my hand on a fully localized version of this “Unidentified Computing Object”. Meanwhile I browse the many sites buzzing around.

even If already the winner for 2007, could be a real contender for 2008 also..

well i prefer the EEE with a 8.9″ screen because with this 7″ version it is too small, and you can get a bad eyesight, but it is still a good product.

A very nice laptop good enough for basic used. With a second screen and bluetooth keyboard/mouse it is even a very good domestic computer for a very nice price. Only 4Gb ? Who needs to carry music and movies when websites like deezer or veoh exist ? And a 16Gb SD will be far enough to bring media files while you’re in holiday far from internet.

Sinon, vivement qu’il sorte ce petit bijou avec une distrib linux qui est parfaitement adaptée à sa configuration.
Enfin un OS linux livré en natif avec la machine. J’espère que ça permettra le développement d’applications et de jeux sur linux…..non non je suis pas pro-linux !!!

Received my Eee 8G December 2007 for Christmas. I loaded XP Pro on it and it’s working great! I’m a writer and needed a portable solution. I found it in the Eee.

I bought this machine as a second computer, next to my 17″ desktop replacement notebook.
The 17″ notebook has since been sold - the Eee PC is that good.

I run Windows XP Pro, Adobe’s Illustrator and Photoshop a every other app I used to have on the 17″ notebook.

I’m looking forward to a version of the EeePC in the same form factor but a higher resolution screen but it’s very usable in its current form. With 2GB of RAM and a 16GB SDHC card, the EeePC can be used as a full-fledged, “one and only” computer. External mouse, keyboard and screen will make you forget you’re on a UMPC, until you unplug and take it with you to the coffee shop for a change of scenery.

This deserves to be the gadget of the year on account of performance, price, usefulness and the “gee whiz” factor. Any shortcomings can be overlooked on account of the offsetting benefits.

I vote for Asus eee PC because it is wonderful and cute. The Xandros linux is a great
idea because it is so easy and cheapest (considering “MicroMou” ).The french
lauching of “eee” on January 23 has been a “beresina” (battle completely lost by the
small Asus-Napoleon because they have been spoiled by the french company SFR,
a phone company, that understand nothing to the computer science and the needs
of our community. They tried to sold the eee at a “Roll Royce” price, arguing from
penury. This “stupidity” has destroy the advertising of Asus in France.

I have had my Eee for two months now. I tried running Ubuntu on it but went back to the Eeeasy original Xandros Linux because its just so practical.
My HSDPA modem lives in my pocket and my Eee is sporting a sexy black leather cover made by Brando. Its the ultimate usable device for someone that runs a webserver company and needs internet access on the go.

In my 30 years of being a computer geek , this is the best value for my money that I have ever gotten. I just cant stop playing with it and showing it off. Its still very rare here in Germany, so when I pull it out I get LOTS of ….ooooohh whats that…not only that, my WIFE likes it… now that is something…

At work I use it for controlling and reprogramming lasers.

At home I use it to control a telescope and downlad images from a CCD camera.

How cool is that?

I’m voting for this as the gadget of the year - I’ve sold my Fujitsu Lifebook (running Ubuntu 7.10) & my Zaurus 3200 PDA (running another linux distro) as this machine does everything I need in terms of functionality & portability. It’s fast enough to play DVD’s (with a small portable USB DVD RW) & will even do transcoding & video editing. Although no way in the league of the fastest laptops out there, it’s definitely good enough as a development platform for Web 2.0 & sound editing. I’ve been using linux for over 10 years, and this has so far been the most rock-solid-no-issues linux machine I’ve ever had.

Although I installed the advanced desktop (ie kde), I tend to still use the default Xandros Easy Dezxktop mode, as I think it fits the small screen much better. I was surprised how quickly my fingers adapted to the small keyboard & screen size….won’t go back to a larger laptop ever again :)

Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant.

Affordable, robust, great spec, great wifi, and did I mention brilliant? God knows why people buy overpriced Apple products when they can now get something like this for a fraction of the cost.

It does exactly what it says on the tin. Fully functional, easy to use mini lap top with shockproof design. I wouldn’t be without mine now. Internet and PC functions anywhere you go. Supplied linux is fine, and I’ve had mine running with XP too. The 7″ screen is a little small, but I think a bigger screen model is coming out soon.

If you can do better for $300-400, show me where. (You won’t be able to!)

The only annoying thing is, I haven’t been able to get hold of one! I’ve been waiting since the 3rd of December with various retailers. Had enough of waiting though, I’m going to go to PC World tomorrow and demand one :D
