View all the objects in the chart(s): most blatant ipod copies, blatant ipod iphoneys
For some unknown reason, some people seem to think that its unfair to call the Zune a rip off of the iPod.

The iPod is the shape of a packet of cigs, has a small screen and round control interface below it. It comes in colors including white.

The Zune is the shape of a packet of cigs, has a small screen and round control interface below it. It comes in colors including “shite”.

I own one, and as you said I think its ufair to call the Zune a rip off. Actualy, I have not found a single MP player that someone has NOT called an iPod rip off!

me: Hey I just got a zune

other: Thats such a rip off!

me: What? No its not! Thats like calling the Sansa e200 a rip off of the iPod!

other: It IS a ripp off!

me: No its not! What about the Arc….

    other: RIP OFF!

    me: Ze…

    other: RIP OFF! RIP OFF!

pretty much how it goes. And about that comparision of the look, what do you want? Do you think it makes more sence to have a pyramid shape, a large screen bigger than the MP3 player, with a pentagon controll interface behind it? Then you would just say that its stupid……..

I think that the UI lookes better and think that the ability to listen to radio and send pictures as well as songs to eachother without extra hardware is great for the Zune. The new Zunes come out soon! but I dont need to buy one to upgrade my software, MS alowes me to upgrade the OS for my Zune, I am only denied the new hardware. Apple has not done this with the iPod, if you want the new software, you need to buy a new iPod..

The Zune has small controls with big screen, the iPod has large controls with a small screen. It may look similar but to think that Apple has the patent on a color and shape is retarded. People have been making black things in the shape of a pack of cigs for years.

MOST hard drive-based MP3 players come in the “packet of cigs” form factor, so I hardly think that’s a strike against it. The screen size, control scheme and functionality are all different - the main similarity is that they both play MP3s and movie files, which is hardly enough to call it a “ripoff.” Just because the iPod is the most popular and recognizable product of the MP3 player genre doesn’t mean that everything else is ripping it off. I call BS on this one.

What’s wrong with taking a great look, and modifying it a little to better suit your own preferences? Isn’t that what every television manufacturer since Zenith or RCA has been doing for more than 60 years? Isn’t that what every refrigerator manufacturer since Kelvinator has been doing for nearly 100 years? Need I go on? Every manufacturer of common items copies some elements of their design from their competitors. That’s not a rip-off, it’s smart business. Using what works, and (in your own mind, at least) improving upon it. Is GM ripping off Ford because their cars come off the assembly line with 4 tires? Manufacturers in consumer goods marketplaces don’t usually try to revolutionize the designs of their products. They stick with the basic design, and improve upon the details. Even Apple has done this.

    B. Gates, I think my first paragraph also addresses your second link. As to the first, come on man. A calculator is a fucking calculator. It doesn’t get much more basic. A scientific calculator is a different story, sure, but a basic, 8-digit calculator? Come on, they all look the same. Nobody can be said to be copying or ripping off anybody else’s design on something that basic. What, you think the iPhone ripped off the Braun because the = button is amber, the outer buttons are brown, and the number buttons are all black? Almost every standard calculator I’ve ever owned in the last 25 years, regardless of brand, looks pretty much the same as that.
