   Good ol’ USSR military commanders, utterly too stupid to figure out that Bombers would have to enter the jet age too.

   This was a WWII plane, pre-jet age. The US let the Soviets copy the ones we sent them on the lend-lease effort. The idea - overwhelm the Nazis with lots of aircraft.

   The USSR military commanders are hardly stupid - we are talking the early- mid 1940s here. It wasn’t until AFTER our “German” scientists gave us the technology transfer from Nazi programs that the Jet Age was ushered in.

   Umm HEllllo…the americans didn’t let the russians copy anything,,,,,,what happened was that there was a small fight of b-29’s that ran out of fuel over russia…the russians let the crews go and kept the planes….they copied them so precisely that the T4’s even had the engine overheating problems of the b-29’s

   Not only were the good year logos copied.. but the bullet holes in the fuselage were also copied too!!!

   @tom t: B29 researched and produced in the _mid_ 40s. and Mark Boehm is right about the soviets copying what they had an original of. They did the same with several other airplaines, trucks, weapons and more. They had to as technogitically the soviets were lagging behind. Of course they had a few good things that’s got copyied by others (SVT riffle from which the gas loader has been copied by the Nazis on for the design of the G43 riffle). But overall pure and simple: copy and *paste* was and is the skill.

   BTW, did you know that by 1943, the Nazi airforce was so understrength that the army couldn’t have proper ground support? The soviets, having air supremacy, did build mostly fighter and ground support plane. By 1944 the soviets were also crunching the remnant of the Nazi army back to inner germany. So much for the bomber interest against the Nazi. On the other hand you can’t ignore the Yalta treaty and the consequences of this event; Soviet and US became ennemies before the war ended. A high altitude bomber able to cary a nuke is a good thing to have in your weapon inventory back then.

   About the US taking over nazi developped technology … escuse me ! jet engine were developped around the world my the mid 40s. the nazis did manage to pull out the first military jet in significant quantity before anyone else, that’s all. the US were readying for the p80: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-80_Shooting_Star.

   My understanding was that since the B-29s were in the Pacific war against Japan and the USSR was nuetral on that. When US bomber crews had to land in the USSR they were interered ie imprisioned until the end of the war. That is how the Russians got the B-29s. They B-29 was not really in action until 1944 IIRC and I don’t think they were used at all in Europe.

   The first mission, flying out of China, was in June 1944, and it was used exclusively in the Pacific, never seeing comabt in Europe.

   As for German technology, in many respects they were years ahead of everyone else in most things - except atomic weapons thankfully - and in Operation Paperclip the USA got the lions share of all the information which allowed them to make huge leaps forward. Some of it can be seen in recent designs, such as the B2 stealth bomber, which uses many design ideas first seen in a German flying wing design of 1944, an example of which was ‘borrowed’ from the Smithsonian when design on it started.

    I believe northrop flying wing designs predate any German flying wing designs.
