Press Release for Immediate Release November 12, 2008 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time!
Written by Steve Rodrigues, President and Chairman, Kalakala Alliance Foundation.

"Steve Rodrigues representing both Kalakala Alliance Foundation & Rodrigues
Enterprises November 7, 2008 met with Steve Reinmuth, WSDOT Chief of Staff,
David Moseley, Executive Director, the WSF contracts advisor, and WSF Naval
Architect to discuss the Foundations negotiated bid. We offered to meet and
exceed the $500,000 plus 10% salvage offer from Environmental Recycling
Systems. And, to allow the Foundation to purchase the 4 steel electrics via a
Charitable Trust. The Foundation stated not all 4 vessels were necessary to
help save the Kalakala. And, the Foundation wanted to negotiated for at least
1 or even two of the steel electrics.

Steve's statement regarding the true value of the Kalakala, Quinault,
Nisqually, Illahee, and Klickatat all together can preserve the past 80 years
of hsitory while saving it for another 100 years for reuse value far exceeds
competitive bid in the amount of $500,000 cash plus 10%.

The meeting then ended and on November 11, 2008 Steve Reinmuth, Chief of Staff
WSDOT, stated no further negotiations with the Foundation. The vessels are
sold to the scrapping company. The States plans are now have them all towed
and scrapped in Mexico instead.

On November 7th & 11th Steve Rodrigues requested Steve Reinmuth to give the
original 1935 MV Kalakala steering wheel and the MV Kalakala 100% to the
Governor at no cost. Our Kalakala history belongs to the 4 steel electrics,
and the future of the Kalakala belongs to the 4 steel electrics. If this is
what the people want then let her cut them all up and be sent to die all
together. Novemeber 11, 2008 the Foundation responded this to Paula Hammond,
Secretary of Department of Transportation, in writing. And, requested an
immediate meeting with her and the Governor to allow the physical donations to
the State asap.

After 10 hard years we have saved our physical Kalakala and recorded her
significant National and State landmark history. But, still not one penny has
been given to the Kalakala from the State or the Governor. Now, she must take
full responsibility for the future Kalakala history and the 4 steel electrics.
Those that have saved her shall not be held responsible for taking her or the
4 steel electrics to their final burial grounds all together. Only the
Governor now can either take the wheel and steer her destiny or completely
stop what is still irreversible. Award the sale of the 4 steel electrics to
the Foundation, and allow the Foundation to sell only what they do not need to
reuse the materials to save the Kalakala for the next 100 years. Or, she can
take the wheel and steer all the ships, so that, they are all gone forever.

It is not too late for The State to stop this all from happening. The people
know that the Kalakala is world class and will always physically be a world
class vessel and community asset. And, the Kalakala and the 4 steel electrics
have served our community well!

We assume the Governor, like in the past, will never honor a meeting with the
Foundation to allow the Kalakala gifts to be presented to her in time. But,
we will hope that she respects our requests of continued negotiations!"

Press Release for Immediate Release

“A World Maritime Treasure”

“There’s Only One”
  KALAKALA

(World’s First Streamlined Ferry)

Today, the Historic Kalakala receives another miracle, and she gives thanks to many.  71 years have passed since her first introduction and instantly became world renowned on July 3, 1935.  The Kalakala may now endure into another generation, and her awesome and significant history is now honored forever.  On January 27, 2006 she was listed on the Washington Heritage Register.  Then, again on March 22, 2006 the Kalakala received historic significance by being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 1935 M/V KALAKALA, located in Tacoma, Washington, joins other properties which contribute to the rich cultural, architectural, and engineering heritage of Washington State.  The Kalakala is historically significant (years, 1935-1962) as a unique, one of a kind, a “concept” vessel.  Her architecture was influenced by Boeing model architect Louis Proctor and designed by Helmuth Schmitz in 1935.  Her distinctive characteristics of the Art deco period captured the imagination of a World War II and Depression Era weary public.  The Kalakala is also significant for her direct association to automobile, and passenger transportation contributions in and around the Puget Sound.  The National Register records the tangible reminders of history of the United States and is the official repository for documentation of cultural resources worthy of preservation.  The Kalakala still retains several World’s First’s patents within her history, and has been a host to many political dignitaries in the past, such as, on an excursion to Victoria, Canada commemorating the visit of their Britannic Royal Majesties, the King and Queen of England, on Tuesday, May 30, Memorial Day 1939.

With these two historic registrations the Kalakala can revive, under Tacoma Washingtons’ wings, and will continue to have safe refuge and hope while striving to get out from her distress.  Another miracle, “PAINT the KALAKALA BEAUTIFUL”, will give the Kalakala a renewal for truly belonging within the Puget Sound community.

Thank you all.
