World’s Tallest Building : the Burj Khalifa status ratified

Completion date for this iconic skyscraper was 4 Jan 2010

Burj Khalifa Dubai : information from US architects Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects.

Note although Adrian Smith helped design the tower he was working for Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) at the time – this has caused some confusion but is quite simple really.

Architect Adrian Smith advises that no new habitable floors will be added to the tower, giving a stronger idea of this secretive skyscraper project’s final appearance.

So far 160 floors of the Burj Dubai tower have been completed. The skyscraper is already the tallest man-made structure in the world, since 7 April 2008. News reports suggest 162 floors will be built.

The focus now will be on building four steel-framed communications floors and the steel spire above. Amazingly this might be up to 70 storeys high, pushing the skyscraper’s final height beyond 800m.

Before the tower reached 629 metres in height the world’s tallest building record was held by the KVLY-TV Mast, North Dakota, USA.

Adrian Smith helps run Chicago practice Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill. Previously he ran another Chicago architects office – Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) won the design competition for this UAE skyscraper in 2003.
