To celebrate, I am Legend, here is a chart of our favorite abandoned technology. Disused military equipment, famous aircraft bone yards, derelict lighthouses, fun fairs subway systems and railway locomotives.

Straight out of a James Bond movie. Click on the photo to view the whole set of photos from this extraordinary former Soviet facility.
Scooby Doo made an entire series out of the idea of spooky abandoned amusement parks. This park near the Chernobyl disaster was abandoned before it sever opened.
The site of the country's largest abandoned subway tunnel. The subway was built and never used, no track was laid and no subway cars were ordered. No passengers ever rode between the six stations that were built.
I had no idea this place existed and am now desperate to visit it. There are some great photos at the website linked to.
In terms of industrial archeology, this is very recent. The NRL Satellite Facility is only 40 years old - and derelict.
Built under Stalin’s order in the middle of nowhere - deep inside Northern Siberia between Salekhard city and Igarka town. This railway was not connected with the rest of the USSR railways system. It is now only accessible by helicopter.
This links to Telstar Logistics excellent photo set from West Coast aircraft boneyards, where the stable dry climate is perfect to mothball large items such as aircraft, outdoors. The most famous of these is not in California, but in the dry desert of Arizona near Tucson.
This was a project I briefly worked on, since the lighting was being done by the set designers I worked for. The idea was to take a magnificent disused steel plant and turn it into a park and concert venue.<p /><p />If only Bethlehem PA would do something like this with the impressive disused plant which dominates the town.
Nothing looks quite as sinister as a giant rusting ship being broken up like a rotting beached whale. Linked to here is the Greenpeace campaign highlighting the fact that this incredibly toxic process is being done on the beaches of poor countries like Bangladesh.
Lighthouses are lonely places. Abandoned lighthouses are the loneliest of the lonely. This derelict lighthouse off the coats of South Wales can be reached at low tide.<p /><p />Its naked, bolted ribs are reminiscent of a design by Lebbeus Woods, the inspiration behind the setting of Alien III and the source of the plagiary in 12 Monkeys.
Famous to many as the building that appears on the cover of Pink Floyds Animals. <p /><p />Battersea power station was Designed by Gilbert Scott, who was also the architect of the Bankside power station that was developed into the Tate Modern, by Herzog and de Meuron. The superior architecture of Battersea has had a less successful outcome. Aggressive developers ripped out the beautiful art deco control room to try and turn it into a condo development in the 80&#039;s.
In a city that turns its back on history, the Vegas neon boneyard is its most sacred location.

Abandoned platforms such as this one off Singapore, are popular with divers. They even have convenient helicopter landing pads.
