the perfect laptop stand

After having been traveling for more than 7 months in the last year, the combination of neck strain and carpal tunnel from using a laptop necessitates buying a really good stand.

I needed two: one that is compact and portable for travel and one that is highly adjustable at home. Being super anal about these things, I looked through hundreds of web sites and so put together an oobject list. The list covers everything from wheeled out units to a truckers cab laptop stand and a wearable harness that actually manages to look undorky but several items are based on the simple premise of a compact or flat folding cheap and simple stand.

In the end I chose both products from the same company, the Evo floating laptop arm, which is most like a task light adjustment system and the mini, tripod-based Cricket laptop stand.

This is the one I'm buying for travel. As a tripod based system it will be relatively unstable, however its one of the few items that looks good and practical without being a concept design gimmick.
From the same people that make the portable cricket. This looks like the best option for a desktop mount.
You might wonder why we've included this, since at this point one might give up and use a stack of books. But a stack of books doesn't fold flat, and frankly this cardboard slotted stand shows how over engineered the other solutions are.
This appears to be a concept only, however it is the only body mounted laptop carrier that doesn't look completely over-designed and absolutely hideous.
The solution we want os something along the lines of this, but far less industrial and there is no way we'll be building it ourselves.
Ideally, Artemide would create a task lamp style stand.
Presumably expensive, this is the laptop version of a high end office furniture monitor system.

It looks sturdy.
This thing is objectively well designed and ergonomic, but it looks like a fruit carton when folded.

Despite the lack of finesse, I'm seriously thinking of getting this.
This thing is $300, but there is a lot more to it than a tabletop stand, with integrated cooling fans, etc.

Dont' be put off by the aesthetics of trucker cab seats. With a decent chair it would make a good home solution.
This looks good and minimalist, complete with weight saving aerospace style metal cut outs. But it doesn't really lift high enough to be flexible.
The CI desk is like an updated version of the classic Kartell storage system. As such, it includes what modern offices need, a laptop stand.
