Developed by a subsidiary of the Canadian firm A.V. Roe the VZ-9 AV has been dubbed the Canadian Flying Saucer. It was a Vertical Take Off and Landing prototype developed for the US military at the height of the Cold War.

“The British Rail flying saucer, officially known simply as space vehicle, was a proposed space vehicle, designed by Charles Osmond Frederick and a patent application was filed by Jensen and Son on behalf of British Rail on December 11, 1970. The flying saucer originally started as a proposal for a raisable platform. However, the project was revised and edited, and by the time the patent was filed had become a large passenger craft for interplanetary travel.” Don’t you just love the Internet?
English Russia, one of our favorite sites, spotted this on popmech.ru. The photo is from a Russian Air Force retiree, who was an eye witness of flying saucers made for Russian army in 1950s on Spitzbergen. The machines were made to test the flight characteristics of the saucer shape.

The Aeroshell was part of the Voyager Balloon System which was launched near Roswell and landed on White Sands Missile Range. They look like flying saucers and are possibly what originated the obsession with Roswell and UFO sightings . Aeroshell was designed for slowing down a Mars lander.
